August Edition:
A New Chapter Begins!

Dear Metta Pets Family,
August marks the beginning of a new chapter—quite literally.
After years of caring for animals with cancer, supporting the people who love them, teaching veterinarians, and witnessing the profound ways these journeys change us, my new book will officially enter the world on August 25.
So Your Pet Has Cancer… Now What?
An Integrative Oncologist’s Guide to Empower You on This Journey
This book was created for anyone who has heard the words “Your pet has cancer” and suddenly found themselves standing in a world filled with unfamiliar decisions, fear, uncertainty, and an overwhelming amount of information.
It is also for veterinary professionals who want to understand and support the entire experience of cancer—not only what is happening within the animal’s body, but also what is happening within the heart, mind, energy, and life of the person who loves them.
At its core, this book carries a message I have come to believe deeply:
Healing is about more than treating disease.
It is about helping pets and their people experience the greatest possible quality of life, connection, meaning, and peace—wherever the journey leads.
With this heart, I have some free on-line events I would like to invite you to. Details Below.
And, of course, the Body, Soul, Spirit Focus that is the signature of the A.S.P.I.R.E. Newsletter.

What if healing could mean more than simply surviving a difficult experience?
In this presentation, we'll explore the interconnected nature of physical health, emotional well-being, energy, spirituality, and the human-animal bond — and practical ways pets and their people can cultivate greater resilience, vitality, connection, and quality of life, during a health challenge and beyond.
A special invitation will be available exclusively to those who attend.

BODY
Creating a Foundation for Well-Being
When a pet is diagnosed with cancer, it is natural to focus immediately on treatments, supplements, diets, medications, and test results.
These are important. But health is rarely supported by one intervention alone.
A pet’s physical well-being is influenced by many interconnected factors:
Nutrition and hydration
Pain and symptom management
Sleep and restorative rest
Movement and mobility
Emotional security
The home environment
The pet parent’s ability to observe changes and communicate clearly with the veterinary team
Supporting the body begins with returning to the essentials.
For Pet Parents
Choose one simple physical need to observe more closely this week.
Is your pet sleeping comfortably?
Are they enjoying their meals?
Can they move through the home easily?
Are there subtle signs of nausea, pain, anxiety, or fatigue?
Small observations can lead to meaningful improvements in comfort and quality of life.
For Veterinary Professionals
Consider asking one question that reaches beyond the clinical measurements:
“What has changed in your pet’s daily life?”
The answer may reveal concerns that laboratory values and imaging cannot show.
SOUL
Caring for the Mind and Emotions
A serious diagnosis affects more than the patient.
Pet parents may experience fear, anticipatory grief, guilt, confusion, exhaustion, and the pressure to make every decision perfectly.
Veterinary professionals may carry the emotional weight of difficult conversations, complex cases, and the desire to do more than medicine can always accomplish.
Trying to suppress these emotions does not make them disappear. It often makes the journey feel even heavier.
Instead, allow yourself to acknowledge what is present without judging it.
You can be frightened and still make thoughtful decisions.
You can feel grief and still experience beautiful moments with your pet.
You can be uncertain and still move forward with love.
A Simple Practice
Place one hand over your heart and take three slow breaths.
Then ask:
“What do I need in order to feel more supported today?”
The answer may be rest, information, help from someone you trust, time outdoors, a conversation with your veterinarian, or permission to stop trying to solve everything at once.
SPIRIT
Finding Meaning Within the Journey
Our animals often bring us back to what is real.
They do not measure life by the number of days on a calendar. They experience the warmth of the sun, the comfort of a familiar voice, the pleasure of a favorite meal, and the safety of being near someone they love.
They remind us that quality of life is created in moments.
The cancer journey can be devastating, but it can also deepen our awareness of love, presence, connection, and what truly matters. It can invite us to become more conscious of how we are living—not only for our animals, but also for ourselves.
Your pet does not need you to navigate every moment perfectly.
They need your presence.
They need your care.
They need the love that has always made you the center of their world.

THIS MONTH'S PRACTICE: The Three-Moment Reset
When your thoughts start racing into the future, pause and name:
One thing that is happening right now — "My pet is resting comfortably beside me."
One thing that is supporting you — "I have a veterinary team helping us."
One thing you are grateful for in this moment — "We are together today."
This practice doesn't deny the difficulty of the situation. It helps your nervous system return to the present, where connection, clarity, and meaningful choices are still available.

✨Closing Thoughts ✨
"Healing begins the moment we stop fighting what we fear and start nurturing what we love." - Dr. Erin Bannink, So Your Pet Has Cancer...Now What.
This doesn't mean ignoring illness, avoiding hard decisions, or pretending everything is fine. It means remembering that fear doesn't have to be the center of the journey.
Love can be the center. Love can guide the questions you ask, the choices you make, the support you receive, and the way you spend the time you have together.
Your animal's story is not defined by a diagnosis. And neither is yours.
With love and gratitude,
